Our History

Motto: The Lord Giveth Wisdom

The Phudmuri Presbyterian School is one of the oldest institutions in Khasi Jaintia Hills starting its humble beginning way back in 1899. But due to many constraints, the School continued as an L.P. School for so many years.
With the passing of time, the sponsoring body of the School which is the Phudmuri Presbyterian Church felt the need for upgrading the Lower Primary School to the Middle English School. The main objective of the School is to impart holistic education and to instruct students with the teachings from the word of God.
After some years of its existence, the Middle English School was closed due to some problems which it encountered. It was in the year 1987, the Proceeding Middle English School was re-opened and it was inaugurated by Rev L. Nongsiej on the 19th February 1987.
In the year 1988, the School got its Opening Permission from the Deputy Inspector of School, East Khasi Hills District under the headship of (L) Smti Dewbitis Lyngdoh. She retired in December 1994.
Over the years, there were problems for students in getting admission into well – established High Schools; therefore a need was felt to upgrade the School into the status of the Proceeding High School. As a result, the Managing Committee of the School unanimously resolved to upgrade the school from the 1995 academic session.
So the Proceeding High School was opened on the 15th February, 1995 and its Opening Permission was granted in the year 2001 by the Inspector of School, East Khasi Hills District under the leadership of Shrimati A. M. Tiewla.
It is noteworthy that there were only eight students who enrolled for class VIII during that first year.
After an inspection of the School by the Inspector of Schools, East Khasi Hills District, it was instructed that the name of the School should be changed from the Phudmuri Presbyterian M. E. School to the Phudmuri Presbyterian Upper Primary School and the Phudmuri Presbyterian High School to the Phudmuri Presbyterian Secondary School.
Inspite of facing many problems and difficulties, the school has increased in the enrolment of students and also in the percentage of passed by the students.
On the 5th December, 2001 the School got its Opening Permission for Class IX and Class X from the Inspector of School, East Khasi Hills District. It also got its recognition from the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on the 22nd February, 2006.
This year, 2020, is the 23rd times the school has sent its students to appear the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination since 1998.
Shrimati A.M. Tiewla resigned as the Headmaster of the School on the 18th February 2007 after serving the school for 13 years.
Miss P. Rynjah, our Principal took over as the Headmaster of the School from then on till date.
Before getting is own school building, the school right from the Primary Section upto the Secondary section, it was held in the basement of the Phudmuri Presbyterian Church. School for the Lower Primary Section was held in the morning shift and the Upper Primary Section and Secondary Section in the day shift. As years goes by, due to increase in the enrolment of the students, it was very difficult to accommodate the students as no extra rooms were available. Because of this problem the Church was able to obtain a piece of land at Phudmuri for the construction of the new school building.
The foundation stone for the construction of the new School building was laid on the 9th August 2002 by the then Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, Shri P.T. Sawkmie.
The Upper Primary Section and the Secondary Section shifted to the partially built School building on the 16th February 2009 and the Lower Primary Section on the 16th February 2011. It was from this year that the School right from the Lower Primary section upto the Secondary section was under the Leadership of Shrimati P. Rynjah.
The School building was inaugurated on the 20th April 2011 by the then Minister of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, (Late) Shri F.S. Cajee.
The construction of the School building as it is now is made possible by the contribution of the Church Members, the parents of the students, the Government of Meghalaya and also by many other donors.
In the year 2017, the Managing Committee of the School has decided to upgrade the Secondary School to the Higher Secondary School due to the problems faced by many students in getting admission to Class XI. This is also as per the direction of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) regarding upgradation of Secondary Schools to the Higher Secondary Level. It was in the year, 2018, that the Higher Secondary Section for Class XI (Arts) Streams was opened. Consequently this year, 2020, is the 1st time the school has sent its students to appear the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination academic session. At present seven teachers from the Secondary Section and four part – time teachers are teaching in the Higher Secondary Section.
Some of the teachers of the School of the Upper Primary and Secondary Section have received Adhoc grant since the year 1996.
At present the strength of the School is closed to 900 students with 40 Teaching and Non – Teaching Staff.
We give thanks to the Lord for all that he has done in all the years and till now we are here, it is because of His grace.
We would also like to thank all the former teachers, the present teachers, the Non – Teaching Staff, the Members of the Managing Committee, the Phudmuri Presbyterian Church, the students, both past and present, the parents, the state government who have tirelessly lend a hand on the development of the school.
Thank you once again for the love and support you have showered on our school.

“The Lord has done great things for us”
AMEN.
